Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
TMJD, TMJ or TMD , or TMJ syndrome, is a collective term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull.
If Dr Stone suspects that your problems are due to an incorrect bite or jaw misalignment, he may help to diagnose the problem by use of a temporary bite raising appliance or a clear acrylic splint that fits over your teeth. These devices will be designed specifically for you and fitted very accurately, so that when you bite on it, all your teeth meet in the correct position and where your muscles can then relax
This appliance may be required all the time or more often only at night. Use of the appliance will allow Dr Stone to diagnose any jaw misalignment problems and make a decision regarding permanent correction of your bite while protecting the existing teeth and joint from further harm.
If your teeth don’t fit together properly, you can have problems in your teeth, gums, the temporo-mandibular joint or the muscles that control movement of your jaw. These problems are called ‘occlusal’ problems. Occlusal problems can be indicated by teeth that are aching, worn, chipped or broken, fractured fillings and loose crowns.
Grinding or pain in your jaw joints, ringing in the ears and difficulty in moving your jaw could all be due to your teeth not aligning and meeting correctly. If the jaw is in the wrong position, the muscle jaws can become overworked and start to ache leading to muscle spasm and headaches. Sinus pain, back and neck pain and pain behind the eyes may also result.
Sports Mouth Guards
Sports guards, mouth guards and mouth protectors are different names for the same thing: a device worn over your teeth that protects them from blows to the face and head. Not surprisingly, bespoke mouth guards provide the most comfortable fit and best protection for you mouth and teeth.
Dr. Robert Stone believes that the best mouth guards are those that are custom made for you. Because they fit and feel better than off the shelf options, most athletes male and female prefer customised mouth guards.
They are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone participating in a sport that involves falls, body contact or flying equipment. This includes rugby, football, basketball, hockey, skateboarding, gymnastics, mountain biking — any activity that might result in an injury to the mouth.
Mouth guards typically cover the upper teeth, and are designed to protect against broken teeth, cut lips and other damage to your mouth. If you wear braces or other fixed dental appliances (such as a bridge) on your lower jaw, Dr Stone may suggest a mouth protector for these teeth as well.
Dr Stone will design a bespoke appliance for you and it will be made by his own team of experienced technicians. Whilst more expensive than the off the shelf options, it will save you money longer term on any trauma to your mouth and teeth. It will also be far more comfortable which will help you concentrate on the game.
